The mitral valve helps prevent blood from moving backwards in the heart. Dr. Robert Salley says the symptoms can include fatigue, shortness of breath and even congestive heart failure.
A lot of patients who are having severe congestive heart failure have associated mitral valve problems [and] are told, "The only thing we can do is treat you with medicines."
We can perform a repair or replacement. We are a highly-rated open heart center and we are a very highly-rated structural heart center. We do as many or more valves surgically as any surgical group in Central and Eastern Kentucky.
The patients really can see a very rapid change in their exercise capacity, their ability to sleep, and the need for medications to control some of their symptoms.
