Vaginal douching

Vaginal Douching

Douching concerns: Overview

Doctors do not recommend douching. Douching is rinsing out the vagina by squirting water or a solution into the vagina.

Douching changes the normal balance of fluids in your vagina. This can make you more likely to get an infection or have vaginal problems, such as bacterial vaginosis (BV).

Douching will not prevent pregnancy. Douching also may cause problems during pregnancy.

What can you do instead of douching?

  • Let the vagina clean itself. The body has its own fluids that naturally keep the vagina clean.
  • Wash the vulva with plain water or a mild, unscented soap.
  • Do not use feminine hygiene soaps, sprays, and powders. They do not help. And they may have chemicals that can irritate your skin.
