In a breast biopsy, we remove a small sample of breast tissue to be examined by one of our pathologists. This procedure may be necessary for diagnosis.
Our breast imaging supports the prevention, diagnosis and effective treatment of breast cancer. It helps us detect cancer earlier and more accurately.
Diagnostic mammography uses additional images and close-up views to further evaluate any new findings or concerns after a routine mammogram.
Our billing team is here to help with any questions you may have about the billing process. For questions about how your insurance will handle charges, please contact your insurance company or check your benefits guide.

Women aged 40 and older should get a mammogram every year. If you have a higher risk, your doctor may suggest starting earlier or getting screened more often.
A 3D mammogram takes pictures of the breast from different angles, which gives a clearer view of any abnormalities. It can be especially helpful for women with dense breast tissue.
Some women feel slight pressure during a mammogram, but any possible discomfort is temporary. Ask your provider for tips or recommendations, such as over-the-counter pain relief medication, to help put your mind at ease. Let the technician know if you feel any discomfort.
A biopsy is a test where a small sample of tissue is taken from the breast to check for cancer cells. It’s usually done if a mammogram or MRI shows something unusual.
What you wear to your mammogram can help make the process smoother. Wear a two-piece outfit, like a top with pants or a skirt, so you can keep your bottoms on during the exam. Please avoid wearing deodorant, lotion or powder under your arms, as these can affect the imaging results.
Yes, you can bring a friend or family member for support, but they may need to wait in the lobby during the actual exam.
Since 2005, CHI Memorial’s mobile health coaches have brought breast cancer screenings to women who may have trouble accessing these services. These 40-foot coaches travel across 28 counties in Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama, offering high-quality screenings.
Each coach is equipped with two dressing rooms, a waiting area and a mammography room with the same advanced digital technology as our MaryEllen Locher Breast Center locations. The coaches are on the road 4-6 days a week, making 1-2 stops daily. For comfort, certified female mammography technologists staff each coach, and softer mammograms are available upon request.
Many women, especially those on late shifts, find it convenient to visit the coach near their workplace for their annual mammogram. With numerous convenient dates and locations, you can join us at an upcoming screening near you. Alternatively, you can arrange for the mobile health coach to visit your church, workplace or community organization, making it even easier for women, especially those on late shifts, to prioritize your health.
Most insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid, cover screening mammograms. Check with your provider for details on coverage and any out-of-pocket costs.
If you don’t have insurance, we’re here to help. We partner with local organizations to provide breast screenings for eligible uninsured and underinsured women in our community.
