Your physician may recommend you visit a pulmonologist if you experience symptoms like persistent shortness of breath, chronic cough, wheezing, chest pain or frequent lung infections. You might also see a pulmonologist if you have a history of smoking or exposure to lung irritants.

Bring a list of your symptoms, any medications you're taking, previous medical records and imaging results.

Lung cancer screening is recommended for people who are at high risk of developing lung cancer. Your insurance should cover lung cancer screening based on the following criteria:

• You are a heavy smoker or former heavy smoker
• You quit smoking less than 15 years ago
• You have Medicare insurance and are between ages 55 and 77
• You have Aetna insurance and are between ages 55 and 79
• You are covered by insurance, and you are between ages 55 and 80
• It has been more than one year since your last chest CT
