Human Trafficking

Education for providers and staff

Educational modules on human trafficking and trauma-informed approaches to patient care and services were developed in partnership with subject matter experts within and outside the organization, including survivors of human trafficking. They include:

  • Human Trafficking 101: Dispelling the Myths
  • Trauma-Informed Approach to Patient Care and Services
  • PEARR: Five steps to victim assistance in health care settings
  • Human Trafficking & Health Care Scenarios

Prior to the pandemic, we regularly provided in-person trainings with survivor speakers. Since then, with support from the CommonSpirit Foundation, we developed online versions of our modules.

PEARR Tool

PEARR tool

The PEARR tool is a key component of our Abuse, Neglect, and Violence policy/procedure. In partnership with HEAL Trafficking and Pacific Survivor Center, we developed the PEARR steps (provide privacy, educate, ask, respect and respond) to offer victim assistance to patients in a trauma-informed manner. The goal is to have an informative conversation with patients to promote health, safety, and well-being, and to create a context for affected patients to naturally share their own experiences and possibly accept further services.

Brochures, safety cards, and posters for patient education

We partnered with the National Survivor Network to develop victim outreach posters, brochures, and safety cards. These resources are available in different languages.

Abuse, neglect, and violence reference guide

Health care personnel often encounter people who are at risk of abuse, neglect and violence. Having a comprehensive overview of definitions, risk factors, indicators and additional information for various types of violence, including human trafficking is key to recognizing the risk.
