Dr. Thomas McGinn appointed as Chief Physician Executive Officer

He will report to CEO Wright Lassiter III and continue to serve as a member of CommonSpirit’s Executive Leadership Team.

CHICAGO – September 12, 2024 – CommonSpirit Health, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit health care systems, today announced the appointment of Thomas McGinn, MD, MPH, as Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Physician Executive Officer (CPEO), effective September 30. Dr. McGinn will report to CEO Wright Lassiter III and continue to serve as a member of CommonSpirit’s Executive Leadership Team.

As the first CPEO for CommonSpirit Health, Dr. McGinn will serve as a dyad partner to Kathy Sanford, DBA, RN, FACHE, FAAN, Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer, and work closely with Terika Richardson, MPH, FACHE, Chief Operating Officer, on all aspects of clinical care across the care continuum. 

Dr. McGinn, in partnership with nursing and operations, will have executive oversight over the full array of clinical activities across CommonSpirit, including both inpatient and outpatient settings. He will provide strategic oversight of the clinical enterprise supporting high-quality care, reducing clinical variation to enhance safety, and promoting equitable access to care.

As CPEO Dr. McGinn will be responsible for clinical service lines, provider experience, Physician Enterprise, population health/PHSO, quality and safety programs, as well as clinical transformation efforts that support growth. Additionally, he will have executive oversight of CommonSpirit’s academic partner relationships, further supporting clinical research and collaboration.

Dr. McGinn brings more than 30 years of progressive senior executive experience in health care. He joined CommonSpirit in 2021 as EVP for Physician Enterprise, where he oversaw all physician and APP employment and alignment models with accountability for advancing clinical integration and population health management. He is nationally recognized for his research and teaching in the areas of quality, AI, implementation science, and health equity and is recognized by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) for his efforts to improve health care, promote evidence-based medicine and reduce wasteful spending. He is also a Professor of Medicine at the Baylor College of Medicine and Clinical Professor of Medicine at Creighton University School of Medicine.

Before CommonSpirit Health, Dr. McGinn served as Deputy Physician-in-Chief and Senior Vice President of Physician Network Operations at Northwell Health where he played a key role in their response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
